And Outside the Market...

mittens and amber!

Riga Central Market

means "push"

Riga Central Market is Europe's largest market and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The market was made from repurposed German Zeppelin hangers.

Walking in Riga

The Riga Ghetto and Latvian Holocaust Museum

Inside the rail car there were mirrors and trees and large photos which made it appear as if you were in the woods outside of Riga where the Jewish people were driven and then killed.

A model of a home in the Jewish ghetto of Riga

was housed in this green house which was restored from the ghetto.

In the courtyard was beautiful, life affirming art.

The names...

One of the hard history museums we visited.  May we never forget.

Beautiful, Old, Wooden Windows and Shutters

Latvian Academy of the Sciences

I hope "maybe" means something else in Latvian, because if it means the same thing...

Riga's Academy of the Sciences was built between 1951 and 1961, and bears a resemblance to many others built in Soviet times in the Stalinist or Socialist Classicism style.  It reminded us of the "Seven Sisters" in Moscow.  The 17th floor is open to the public as an open air viewing platform.  The day was clear and we had a splendid view of Riga.
