Plane Tree of Krassi

Across the street from the waterworks are three plane trees, the one in the center of the square is the largest and oldest.  The circumference of the tree is 24 meters (over 78 feet) and it is said to be over 2400 years old.  It is the largest tree on Crete and was offering shade when the Romans built the waterworks in Krasi and Nikos Kazantzakis, the most famous Greek writer spent summers relaxing under the tree with family and friends.
