E.R.O.S.

SD from Space cloud free, false color composite was acquired in September and October from 1986 -1993.  Healthy vegetation appears red.  S is pointing to our home!  H is pointing to the Badlands.

The Large Format Camera was an experimental system designed to capture images for precise mapping from space.  It's only flight was aboard the Challenger mission October 5 -7, 1984.  The experiment was a success, but the technology was too expensive.(Self Guided Tour Information)

A 1/2 scale model of the Landsat 7 satellite.

A model of the camera portion of the satellite.

Some of the photos taken were for research on mm - ats (frogs).
Along the 29 corridor between our exit and Sioux Falls is a sign for EROS and it appears on the map as well.  I had no idea what is was, I only knew I wanted to visit!  Later, I got some vague information that linked it to geological stuff and photos of the earth like Google Earth in my mind.  Since my Dad was here I thought it would be a good place to visit, as geological stuff and Google Earth are right up his alley.  Turns out EROS is the Earth Resources Observation and Science Center.  The US Department of the Interior established the EROS program in the late 1960's to collect, manage, and distribute imagery relating to the surface of the earth.  When it started the images were all film, now they are digital.  The rural area was chosen because it was close to the geographic center of the US and there was not a lot of light or radio interference.  We had to go through security to enter the building and show ID.  M set off the metal detector with the grommets on his boots and ended up going through one shoe on one shoe off!  We were not allowed to take photos outside the building, a little puzzling because there photos and directions on the internet, but we were allowed to take photos inside the building in the public areas.  Interesting enough there are scientists from all over the world studying images here and it is the only place outside of NY that the United Nations flag flies in the US.
