What is it about bowling shoes?

C insisted he wear bowling shoes, the smallest size available was several sizes too big.  The man at the alley suggested he bowl in his socks, nothing doing!  After a while he did try bowling barefoot.  He also enjoyed the driving game, sans quarters.
