Devils Tower National Monument

In many of the trees we saw Native American prayer cloths and bundles.

In 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Devils Tower the first National Monument under the new Antiquities Act.  The name offends some Native Americans who consider the tower and the area sacred. Bear Lodge is one of many Native American names for the tower.  It is probably best remembered for its role in the 1978 movie _Close Encounters of the Third Kind_.
