Homestake Mine's Open Cut

Before it closed in 2002 the Homestake Mine was the oldest, largest and deepest mine in the Western Hemisphere.   It reached more than 8000 feet below the town of Lead SD.  Although they are not mining for gold any longer there is still treasure to be found in "them that hills". Sanford's  DUSEL (Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory) is now located in the mine where scientists will "mine" subatomic neutrino particles.
