In Russia

it would not be New Year's Eve without mandarin oranges.  Russians associate the smell of mandarin oranges with New Year's Eve.  In Soviet times fruit was hard to come by and mandarin oranges came from Abkhazia and ripened in time for New Year's Eve and so became a staple on every holiday table. I love mandarins and we picked some up in the grocery in Turkey, I am not sure where they were grown.
