At the bottom of the statue is Saint George slaying the dragon and at the top is a statue of Nike, goddess of victory. |
The obelisk is 1418 m high to mark the 1481 days and nights of wartime. |
The building in the background is, I think, Moscow State University. |
There is also a Mosque and a Synagogue in the park but we didn't find them on this trip. |
You didn't think we'd just ride the metro to the deepest station and ride up and down the escalator, did you? No, I'm sure you figured I find something to do nearby. . .Victory Park was created to remember The Great Patriotic War, which to the rest of the world(most of the world, some of the world, just the USA? another example of my Americentrism) is known as World War II. We'll have to make this trip again in warmer weather to see the 1481 fountains. Although, I think we'll steer clear on 9 May, Victory Day in Russia when this park becomes the center of Moscow's festivities, especially as the emphasis is on celebration rather than remembrance.
