September 1st is the Day of Learning and Knowledge and is the day the Russian children go back to school. Since September 1st fell on a Sunday this year some children visited their schools with flowers for their teachers and then started school on Monday, others just brought their flowers on Monday when they started school. There were children dressed up everywhere with beautiful white ribbons and bows in their hair carrying flowers. Since R does not have American holidays off we started school on September 2nd even though it was Labor Day. We did read about the history of Labor Day though. And just in case you were wondering there were school supply sales just like in the USA. Some of the items are the same or similar, others are different. There do not seem to be a lot of crayon sales and everyone uses the small green booklets that American children remember from essay tests. We have a first grader, a fifth grader, a seventh grader and an eleventh grader this year and this is my fifteenth year of homeschooling.
