Market Square

There was music and

performance artists.

In the market were stalls full of woolen and wooden items.

This monument is known as Tsarina's stone and is made of red granite.  It was erected in 1835 to celebrate Tsar Nicolai I and Tsarina Alexandria.

The market was full of fresh fish, fruit and vegetables.

The water is known as Cholera Basin after a seaman died in 1897 of cholera.

Havis Amanda was sculpted by Ville Vallgren in Paris in 1906 and installed in Market Square in 1908 amidst controversy.  He called it Merenneito or The Mermaid.

Today it is considered the most important and most beautiful art in Helsinki.
