Because palms were difficult to get in the far north of Russia, the people used (and still use) pussy willow branches to celebrate Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. Typically the Eastern Orthodox and the Western churches are on a slightly different calendar, but this year Holy week for both the Eastern and Western church coincided.
