Ostankino Tower

Video Monitor in the Elevator Showing our Fast Ascent

Floor Indicator in Elevator

Floor indicator, video monitor and numerical Countdown on our descent.

We had an opportunity to visit the Ostankino Radio and TV Tower with C's Cub Scout Pack.  Ostankino Tower was designed by Nikolai Nikitin and construction started in 1963 and was completed in 1967.  When it was built it was the tallest free standing structure in the world, today it is the tallest in Europe and the eighth tallest in the world. The elevators travel at 6 m/s to the observation deck which is located at a height of 337 meters.  When you exit the elevators you are in a glass enclosed observation deck.  Above each window is a photo showing what can be seen out the window with Russian and English descriptions.  There is a section of specially designed "glass" floor panels so you can look down at the ground way under your feet.  If the weather is cooperative you can climb the stairs one more floor up to an open air deck.  There is protective grating in place but the breeze was quite stiff!  You have to be seven years old to ascend to the observation deck and don't forget your passport!  AWESOME!
