Hurricane Monument, Islamorada, Florida

In the crypt of the monument lie the remains of many of the hurricane victims.

Much of the monument is made of coral slabs known as keystone quarried from nearby Windley Key and Key Largo.

The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 is still known as one of the strongest, most intense, and lowest pressure hurricanes to make landfall in the USA.  There were 408 recorded deaths, one of the reasons the death toll was so high was there were several veteran's work camps in the area and they did not know/nor were told the risks of the Florida hurricane season.
