Maslenitsa

Maslenitsa is the Slavic religious and folk holiday celebrated during the last week before Lent.  It is somewhat akin to Madi Gras or Carnivale or Fasching.  The Maslenitsa doll is burnt and the ashes are scattered on fields to encourage fertility of the crops.  We enjoyed a troika ride, made our own Maslenitsa dolls and watched a horse riding exhibition and the burning of the Maslenitsa doll.
