Chocolate

In several of the windows of chocolate stores we saw small hand shaped chocolates and cookies.  I thought of hospitality, D thought of prayer.  We entered a chocolate shop to ask and the shop keeper gave us a trifold leaflet with the story of the Antwerpse Handjes.  "According to legend, the name of the city originates in the story of the giant Druoon Antigoon who levied a heavy toll on traffic on the river Scheldt.  If a skipper refused to pay, the giant chopped off his right hand and threw it into the river.  Silvius Brabo, a Roman centurion, challenged Antigoon to a duel, defeated him and chopped off his hand and threw it into the river Scheldt.  Hand-werpen means "Throwing the Hand"  These days Antwerpse Handjes are offered as as token of the city."  The shopkeeper then told us the story was depicted in the fountain in the Grote Markt.
