our tour guide

Novodevichy Cemetery
The American Women's Organization (AWO) has interest groups.  I have been attending one called Understanding Russia which is taught by a Russian woman who also works as a tour guide.  Our last meeting this year was a tour of the Novodevichy Cemetery.  As you can see from the photos, Russian cemeteries are quite different from American cemeteries.  The gravestones often depict the deceased's profession.  Most also have a picture of the deceased on them.  This is a very famous cemetery in Moscow and has many historical figures and notable characters buried within its walls.  In addition it was lovely, full of the scent of lilacs and the sound of birds.
