During Soviet times Christmas was not celebrated, but in order to show the prosperity of the communist party the New Year holiday became the decorating, gift giving, eating, drinking and being merry holiday. Trees are set up, sold and decorated as New Year Trees. Although Christmas is once again celebrated in Russia it is not the primary holiday of the season.
