I read a book and watched the fireworks out our hotel window. R went with some work colleagues to a restaurant where they watched the Presidential address and watched Russians write a wish for the new year on a slip of paper, burn it, put the ashes in a glass of champagne and drink up. It was the first New Year's Eve we have not been together in many years. While our plans were to enjoy some warmer ( relatively speaking, we knew Turkey would not be warm, but it would be warmer than Norway or Russia) weather together during the Russian holidays, we arrived in Istanbul in snow flurries and R stayed in Russia for a few extra days to deal with an animal health crisis.
*Note to self, learn how to photograph fireworks!
