"In 1860, the need arose for a ferry below the Mittlere Rheinbrucke (Middle Rhine bridge). A lengthy disagreement about the concessions delayed the commencement of service until 7 July 1962. Finally, the "Vogel Gryff" went into service for the citizens and the tourists."
Between Basel's five bridges are four ferries, that cross the river using only the natural power of the river's current.
The first ferry we approached was not yet open that Sunday morning. The next one was, but it was on the other side of the river. So, I rang the bell and we saw the ferryman head across the river to pick us up! He helped us aboard and took us across the river. He docked and helped us disembark before he welcomed his next passengers on board.
