in the Russian Orthodox Calendar is Palm Sunday, often called Pussy Willow Sunday. Because palms did not grow in much of Russian the people chose a plentiful spring plant for a substitute. Bunches of pussy willows are sold outside of metros, malls and churches. You buy your pussy willows and take them to church on Palm Sunday for the priest to bless. You then take your pussy willows home to "whip" your loved ones in order to bless them in the coming year.
