The Sap is Running

The girls and I were walking back to the metro from riding when we noticed a couple icicles.  Not on every branch nor on every tree.  So we looked closer and noticed that they were on the end of branches that had been broken recently and only on Maple trees.  So we surmised that it was sap running from the broken spots on the trees.  We checked our hypothesis by breaking off the icicle and tasting it, sure enough, slightly sweet!  There are Maple trees in Russia and the climate in this area would be conducive to tapping trees for making Maple syrup but Maple syrup is a mostly North American thing.  Although they have had some success in Japan and South Korea.  We recalled several years ago when we were living in MN and had our exchange student from Switzerland, who having never had maple syrup before, becoming very fond of it and thoroughly enjoying a field trip we took to a MN state park to learn about making maple syrup.
