Treasures in a Suitcase

We have a friend from our time in MN who is also living and working in Russia but in a region nearer to Sochi.  On her recent trips through Moscow we convinced her to stay with us rather than in a hotel.  Not as restful perhaps but more like home!  She stopped here on her way home from a business trip to Canada by way of Amsterdam (I think). She had goodies in her suitcase for us.  The cheese was from Netherlands, the brown sugar and maple syrup from Canada.  We can buy brown sugar here, but it is more like white sugar colored brown in consistency and does not bake the same way that North American brown sugar does. And maple syrup is available at Stockman's Department Store but it is VERY pricey.  I used to be able to find blini mix at our grocery store and we would make blini on Saturday morning and serve it with jam or caviar.  But, alas I cannot find blini mix anymore at our local grocery.  AND for REAL maple syrup we needed REAL pancakes anyway!  So, I looked up a pancake recipe and we've enjoyed pancakes multiple times now. Thank you Mrs. S!
